- Sign in with the account that has Copilot
A license validation error often means you are signed in with an account without Copilot. Select your account icon and choose Sign in with a different account.
- Use your work account for work files
Copilot from a Personal or Family plan cannot be used on files from your work or school. Sign in with your work or school account if your organization provides Copilot.
- Turn on third-party cookies in the browser
In Microsoft 365 web apps, Copilot needs third-party cookies to check your license. They are often blocked in private windows and in Safari.
- Move the file to OneDrive or SharePoint
Copilot can fail on files stored with other cloud storage providers. Copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint, then try Copilot again.

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant for chat, search, writing and images. Why isn't Microsoft Copilot working for me?
Most problems are local. Restart the app or device, check your internet connection, and make sure the app is up to date. If many other people are reporting the same problem, Microsoft Copilot itself is probably having an outage and you need to wait.
How do I report a problem with Microsoft Copilot?
Use the "I have a problem" button at the top of this page and pick what is not working. Reports are anonymous. They help other people see right away if Microsoft Copilot is down for everyone.
How does IsDownUS decide if Microsoft Copilot is down?
We count problem reports from users every 15 minutes and compare the last hour with what is normal for that time of day over the past week. A small rise shows "Possible problems". Copilot could not confirm your license. Check that you are signed in with the account that has Copilot, use your work account for work files, allow third-party cookies in your browser, and keep the file in OneDrive or SharePoint.
