Contactless payments need NFC. Go to Connected devices, Connection preferences, NFC, and turn it on.
- Make Google Wallet your default payment app
Set Google Wallet as the default contactless payment app in your NFC settings.
- Unlock your phone before tapping
Waking the screen is not enough. Unlock your phone, and make sure a screen lock is set up.

About Google Wallet
Google Wallet, part of Google Pay, stores payment cards, transit passes, tickets, loyalty cards and IDs on Android phones and Wear OS watches. People tap their phone or watch to pay in stores and use saved cards to pay online and in apps. Problems usually show up as taps that are declined at the terminal, cards that cannot be added or verified, or the app not opening.

Is Google Wallet down right now?
No. Right now there are no widespread problems with Google Wallet. If it is not working for you, the problem is probably on your side. See "Is it just me?" above.
Why isn't Google Wallet working for me?
Most problems are local. Restart the app or device, check your internet connection, and make sure the app is up to date. If many other people are reporting the same problem, Google Wallet itself is probably having an outage and you need to wait.
How do I report a problem with Google Wallet?
Use the "I have a problem" button at the top of this page and pick what is not working. Reports are anonymous. They help other people see right away if Google Wallet is down for everyone.
How does IsDownUS decide if Google Wallet is down?
We count problem reports from users every 15 minutes and compare the last hour with what is normal for that time of day over the past week. A small rise shows "Possible problems". Why isn't Google Wallet tap to pay working?
Check that NFC is on, Google Wallet is your default payment app, a screen lock is set and your phone is unlocked when you tap. Phones that do not meet security requirements cannot use tap to pay.
